In his view art critics should use artworks to show us how we look to reality. He quotes the French philosopher Jacques Rancierre: Artistic fiction shows how we look - not how we should look. Art therefore never has a message. Art is neither left nor right, and art is not a means, not for a political purpose nor for the satisfaction of our lusts. Rancierre and Simon have strong doubt about arts’ capacity to change the world. It may change people, change people’s perceptions and perspectives, but there is scarce evidence that art influence goes any further than that.
Artists are expected to look and think differently to men, society and the world. They will use their art to tell a different story to the general public. Art critics may help them to explain that ands at the same time question those stories.
