Whatever, people need to decide for themselves if they consider a certain object as a ‘work of art’. Many feel that the artist’s autonomy is important, his or her originality, inventiveness, the ability to communicate or generate emotions, or the craftsmanship (but will weigh tese criteria in a different manner). Secondly, the artist may have qualities, but not all his/her works may be successful. So obviously the quality of the work of art itself is to be considered, the technical quality, its beauty, the symbolic content (again, there is a weight issue). People often will reject a too commercial approach.
Individuals will have their opinion. Next to that, in formal art circles, art is defined by a small elite, linked to institutional interests. Interesting is of course how this art ‘elite’ makes such consideration and decisions, how a work of art gets into a museum or not, will be sold for a million plus prize or not….
