Art and religion seem to have a similar role towards society: critical, deepening. They may show something different than the common, usual things. A view on a different kind of world. Art and religion may have similar effects: enhancing spiritual depth, inwardness, meaning, and signification.
For centuries churches used to be important clients for artist. Art gave often an interpretation of religion, of its meanings and stories. In our time, the role of the church in art has virtually disappeared.
Artists may be inspired by religious or spiritual sources. But the question is, does art, in this period of secularization, replace religion? Do people prefer to visit a museum or concert hall instead of a church service? Or is art somehow complementary to religion?
