Hendrik Werkman was a graphic designer who developed innovative methods for artistic graphic work. One can characterise his work as expressionist, constructivist, with beautiful soft colours, stylized forms, and balanced transparent compositions. Werkman was always experimenting, searching for new forms and techniques.
He had an activist attitude, being founding member of ‘De Ploeg’, a group of artists. He even launched an international avant-garde art magazine, promoting art, courage, artistic independence. He was executed by the German occupation forces, just one day before the liberation, 70 years ago. A source of inspiration for many people.
